Individual Project Proposal

Persuasive Design for Campus, City and Community

Contents

[edit] Problem Statement

Because of the geological location of UC Berkeley, located on the hillside, it is difficult and time consuming for students to go from one building to another within the Berkeley campus. Students often have trouble getting class on time. The areas that most people complain about are the uphill from Memorial Glade to Northgate, VLSB to Campanile, and from Cory to Hearst Ave where it often takes up more than five minutes to get on the elevator. Students often have to leave class early in order to get to their next class on time. Therefore, I propose the following design to allow students to have more time to concentrate in their classes instead of hiking.

[edit] Target User Group

My target user group is everyone in the UC Berkeley community, especially the undergraduate students. Most of the undergraduate students have classes everywhere across the campus. They will have more energy to focus on their studies if they spend less time traveling across the campus. This will encourage students to go to classes. I have found out that many students do not go to classes because the classrooms are too far so the students are too lazy to go to classes.

[edit] Design Details

I propose to build escalators, the ones that used in airports, in the areas that I have mentioned above. The design will use solar energy to power the escalator and therefore, it would not increase the expenses in electricity after the escalators have been built.

[edit] Problem Context and Forces

The current situation of traveling time will get worse during the construction period because these locations are currently the only or the fastest way to get from one location to another. The designer must consider the aesthetic of escalators so they would not affect the landscape of Berkeley campus. Such design has already been used in other locations such amusement park to help the visitors to travel from a lower area to higher area.
