Recycle Bins
Contents |
[edit] Overview:
The United States generates approximately 208 million tons of municipal waste a year. Soon enough, humans will be forced to find other methods of storing waste, with the existing space for landfills decreasing. Lack of recycling is a significant concern that affects everyone. Recycling allows humans to conserve materials, cut costs, and promote an environmentally friendly world. Many services are here to help facilitate recycling, however, excess waste is an ever-increasing concern in our community.
[edit] Problem Description:
Current recycle bins are typically collect specific types of recyclable material, such as aluminum, paper, and plastic. Some bins contain individual dividers for these materials, while others are only designed for one type of material.
Recycle bins designed to attract children, the target user, will significantly reduce overall waste in ones community. Children are attracted to objects that spark their curiosity, such as with toys and games. Redesigning everyday recycle bins to create one specifically for children will not only instill the child with proper recycling habits, but will also contribute to the recycling effort. As a result, a child walking with his or her parents along the city streets will be presented with another fun, enjoyable activity that also benefits the environment.
[edit] Context & Forces:
[edit] Effectiveness:
The redesigned child’s recycle bin will only have an impact if the child finds the object playful enough to instill him or her with the desire of putting recyclables in it.
[edit] Location:
The optimal environment to place these bins are in areas with heavy traffic of parents and children, such as in parks and certain city areas.
[edit] Motivation & Value:
By recognizing recycling as something that can be fun and enjoyable, a child will grow up with these good behaviors, thus perpetuated the cycle to future generations.
[edit] Existing Solutions:
Trash bins that may attract children, but no children’s recycle been exists yet.
[edit] Solution Sketch:
Preliminary sketches for a child’s recycle bin are in the form of animal and colored shaped bins:
