[edit] Introduction
Design a one page U.S. letter sized poster advertising IEOR 170 (we'll use the best one next year!). You may try to identify design patterns from successful posters you saw, and apply them in your own design. You may also leverage design principles/techniques/human perception knowledge you have learned from this course in this poster.
[edit] Requirements
Your primary target audience will be IEOR junior/senior undergraduates and undergraduate students in other departments who are intersted in topics on design and human factors. They are intersted in knowing what kind of knowledge they can learn from this class so that they can decide whether to take this class or not.
Your poster should let the prospective students (who may not have any previous knowledge on design and human factors) know the benefits of taking this class, but you shouldn't hype in the poster.
Acknowledge the source on your wiki page for resources/design patterns you leveraged for this assignment.
[edit] What to Hand In
Submit both a paper copy in-class and an electronic version on our class wiki. The paper version will be returned to you after grading. You may use digital cameras or scanners to digitize your sketches and upload them onto the class wiki.
[edit] Writing Guidelines
In addition to the criteria listed below, three best designs will receive 10% extra credit for this assignment.
[edit] Creativity 25%
Try to make your design unique and innovative from among dozens of posters you may see every day.
[edit] Effectiveness of communication 40%
Make sure to convey the important information to your target audience accurately - e.g. what is IEOR 170, what kind of topics you can learn from IEOR 170, why you should or shouldn't take IEOR 170 etc.
[edit] Incorporation of the design techniques 20%
Use the design principles, design wisdoms and knowledge on human perception effectively in your poster, but you shouldn't abuse them. Remember - there is no silver bullet in design, most design principles/design patterns have their own contexts and constrains.
[edit] Color/Style arrangement 15%
Make your poster visually appealing, but you shouldn't abuse color or other visual elements in your poster.
[edit] Wiki Submission Guideline
[edit] Creating a Wiki Page for this assignment
Begin by creating a new wiki page for this assignment. Go to your user page that you created when you made your account. You can get to it by typing the following URL into your browser:
http://lbs.cs.berkeley.edu:8080/wiki/index.php/User:FirstName_LastName
Replace FirstName and LastName with your real first and last names. This will take you to the page you created for yourself when you created your wiki account. If you have trouble accessing this page, please check that you created your wiki account properly.
Edit your user page to add a link to a new wiki page for this assignment. The wiki syntax should look like this:
* IEOR 170 Poster - FirstName LastName
Again replace FirstName and LastName with your name. Look at Jingtao Wang’s user page for an example. This will create a link that can follow to create your new page. Click on the link and enter the information about your assignment. Be sure to clearly address everything mentioned in the writing guidlines above.
[edit] Uploading Images
To upload images to the wiki, first create a link for the image of the form (replacing image_name.jpg with a unique image name for use by the server). This will create a link you can follow that will then allow you to upload the image. Alternatively, you can use the "Upload file" link in the toolbox to upload the image first, and then subsequently create a link to it on your wiki page.
[edit] Adding a Link to Your Finished Assignment
Once you are finished editing the page, add a link to it here with your full name as the link text. The wiki syntax will look like this: * Homework 1 - FirstName LastName .
